With Fat Tuesday on the horizon...

I was knitting with some friends last Friday and was thinking that Lent must be coming up pretty soon – I’m possibly the least religious person I know, so to be honest, what I was really thinking about were paczkis (that’s probably not the correct plural, but it’s the only polish word I know) and whether anyone would bring some to the office on Tuesday, etc…



There really is a knitting connection here, stick with me. Thoughts of Mardi Gras, Paczky Day, etc lead me to think about Lent and the Christian tradition of giving something up during the days leading up to Easter. Whether or not one practices a particular faith isn’t the point – it’s that good ol’ puritan ethic that “deprivation builds character”. So in the spirit of things I decided that I could benefit from a little deprivation. Here it is folks –


I resolve not to cast on any new projects until April 8th. Until then I will only work on finishing my in-progress projects.


I’m hoping that in the next six weeks or so, I can finish everything. I tried to make a list from memory – 11 items in all, ranging from baby booties to a complicated cable & eyelet sweater. There may be more forgotten projects that I’ll discover once I start digging.


So is anyone else game to do this with me?

Now, this IS a challenge! What a great idea, Louise! It figures that I just stopped to pick up another skein on the way home to finish a project! Does it count that I have not yet cast on the project, but have the yarn, needles, and pattern sitting out and ready to go? (In my mind, I already started it!) Whoa, I'm giving this considerable thought...especially since I gave up dark chocolate a while back.

I'm in. Joanie is too, she WILL NOT, absolutely WILL NOT begin any new knitting projects until after Easter. . .

BSKG 1st Guest Post

She’s the kind of friend that has all these crazy, great ideas, and somehow, before you know it, you’re smack dab in the middle of something! This friend is the reason that I found myself starting a knitting guild (BSKG) with her a few years ago and found myself president of said guild a few years later. She is also the reason that I started designing patterns. I was just drifting along, calmly knitting away when she said “write a pattern, challenge yourself” That is how I came to write my very first pattern “Etta” which appeared in Lace One Skein Wonders . Now writing a pattern didn’t come easy, there were many mistakes along the way, but I stuck with it and finally I had a pattern I was proud to publish on Ravelry. March Guild Meeting with Melynda Bernardi

Our guest speaker,  Melynda Bernardi of French Press  Knits, was wonderful! She shared about her background as a knitter, how the name French Press Knits was chosen,  how she started by selling felted slippers and progressed in to writing patterns. Her work is beautiful and she brought several samples to share. Melynda graciously offered a discount on her online patterns for the month of March for our guild members!
